The name Mathikettan derives from the Tamil word literally meaning 'mind confuser', as the local people say that one forgets the path once he enters into the park.It notified as a national park to protect the wildlife and rich biodiversity of the area.The shola forest in the area is bestowed with unit with geological faunal and floral and geomorphological wealth.

The park is 120 Kms from Cochin and Aluva is the nearest railway station in Kerala. It is 12.82 km² wide. Theni railway station, about 55 Km from the Mathikettan Shola National Park. Theni railway station is well connected by road to Mathikettan Shola National Park. Mathikettan Shola National Park is well connected to Major Cities and Places by road network. There are a number of government and privately operated vehicles that go to Mathikettan Shola National Park at frequent intervals.

Shola will get South West and North East Monsoons, so the best time to visit is April to September of the year.

Also reptiles like King cobra, Rat snakes, Crocodiles, Vipers, Cobras, Turtles, Lizards, Pythons etc.
